Hidden characters are not always unwanted

Sources checked: 9 October 2026

Invisible does not mean useless

Unicode includes characters that control line breaks, writing direction and how letters or emoji connect. Copying between editors can preserve these characters even when you cannot see them. Their presence does not establish AI authorship.

Available cleanup

You can select zero-width space (U+200B), BOM / zero-width no-break space (U+FEFF), soft hyphen (U+00AD) and word joiner (U+2060) for removal. No type is selected automatically.

Deleting these can change word boundaries or line wrapping. Review the marked original and cleaned output before copying. Restore original clears the result and retains the source text.

Characters we preserve

The inspector also shows non-breaking spaces, joiners, variation selectors and supported writing-direction controls. This version keeps them intact because they may be required for typography, languages or emoji sequences.

Positions count Unicode code points from one, not bytes or visual glyphs. The first twelve positions per type are listed. The preview is capped at 10,000 UTF-16 units; inspection covers the complete input up to 100,000 units.
